DeWalt DWS779 12” Compound Miter Saw Review
The DeWalt power tool line is well known in the industry. They have been around for about a century and keep improving with every new line introduced. DeWalt has built their reputation because of their sturdy and durable power tools that you can use at home and on the job site.
The DeWalt DWS779 compound miter saw is one example of this dependability. So, whether you are a weekend woodwork hobbyist, or a professional industrial craftsman, the DSW779 can deliver the accuracy and precision you’ve come to expect from a century of power tool experience.
Who is this product for?
The DWS779 model compound miter saw from DeWalt is for beginners and power tool veterans alike. There is a very small learning curve, but DeWalt strives to make user-friendly devices that can be used by anyone.
This is an expensive saw. But, consider that it is a larger sized sliding compound miter saw and it is a little less expensive than its counterparts from other companies.
When you choose the DWS779, you will get the miter saw and a starting 12” carbide blade. The blade can be replaced by your favorite one. But, the one included is of decent quality.
You will also receive a blade wrench in case you do choose to change out the blades and a user guide. It is a corded power tool, so you don’t have to worry about battery packs or chargers. It also comes with a small bag that attaches to the dust collection port.
Overview of features
One of the best things about the DWS779 model of the DeWalt compound miter saw family is the ability to make smooth and accurate cuts with very little drag. It doesn’t have a laser guiding system, but if you are like most people, you probably prefer to measure your work yourself anyway.
In addition, this compound miter saw has high back fences that are moveable. The back fences determine your wood cutting capacity. And, DeWalt delivers options with the height of theirs.
In the world of woodworking, how much you can cut is just as important as whether you can cut. This DeWalt has great working capacity that can accommodate most projects you throw at it.
You can make 90-degree cuts on wood up to 2×16. For 45-degree cuts, you can max out at 2x12s. And, if your projects require you to do crown moldings, the DWS779 can handle it up to 7 ½” vertically against the fence. You can also do a decent amount for base moldings at 6 ¾” maximum.
Additionally, it has a great dust collection system. Generally, compound miter saw dust collection is ineffective. But, the DWS779 integrates a dust collection system that really works.
You can use this compound miter saw straight out of the box, too. Barring occasional factory defects, the miter saw is calibrated perfectly with zero to minimal additional set-up needed.
The 15-amp motor delivers smooth cuts at 3800 rpms. And, this motor is powerful enough for a variety of different projects. But, you may experience a kickback when you start the blade spinning.
Speaking of comfort, it is on the heavier side for a miter saw. But, the heft feels very sturdy and there are hand holds located around the saw to move it easier if you need to.
Get the Most out of It
If you like this model, but wish it had DeWalt’s XPS system for added accuracy, there is an alternative available. The DWS780 is the same as the DWS779 with one exception: it has the integrated XPS system. It’s more expensive, but that’s because of the added system.
The XPS system is a laser guide on either side of the blade for increased accuracy. The laser casts a shadow onto the work piece where the blade will come down. As the blade gets closer to piece, the line sharpens.
Having a laser guide on your miter saw depends on your preference, but it is not essential for performance. Otherwise, the specs on the DWS779 and the DWS780 are the same. So, you can pick whether the XPS is essential to you without having to sacrifice the precision and accuracy of a good miter saw.
The DeWalt DWS779 compound miter saw is the best miter saw for your money. The accuracy and precision of the saw is top of the line quality. And, it is sturdy and meant to last which is what you want when you pour your money into an investment like this.
The versatile options that the DWS779 can handle are seemingly endless. So, it can do all your different woodworking projects with ease. You may even find new projects for the chance to use this miter saw again.
